Civil War veteran Peter Smith (Columbus, OH) needed to prove to the pension agent that he was alive in order to collect his pension. His estranged wife, whom Smith claims to have separated from before the war, claimed he died twenty years earlier and was collecting his pension from Alexandria, VA. The pension department then turned to investigate Smith's wife.
