John Jones reunites with his mother, Parthenia Jones, and brother

REUNITED AFTER THIRTY YEARS.
A Family Separated on the Slave Auction
Block Find Each Other Again.
Supt. Byrnes recently received a letter from
a resident of Washington, D. C., asking the
assistance of New York's police in tracing the
whereabouts of an aged and long-lost mother.
The letter was signed John Jones. The writer
explained that he was born a slave in the
South, but was now prosperous and anxious to
find his mother and brother, whom he had not
seen since the war. His mother, he thought,
was a ' ' preaching missionary ' ' in Gotham
who would answer to the name of ' ' Parthenia
Jones. ' '
The letter was published in the newspapers,
and it now appears that a family long separated
are about the be reunited. Parthenia Jones,
the aged mother, has been traced to River-
head, L. I., where she is conducting a revival
in the African Methodist Church. The lost
brother turns out to be a sleeping-car porter in
well-to-do circumstances, living at No. 345
West Forty-fourth street. John Jones, who lives
in Washington, and who has been suc-
cessful in accumulating this world's goods,
was separated from his mother and brother by
' ' a sale under the hammer, ' ' and has not
seen either since. It is hard to appreciate
such a condition of affairs in these days of
freedom. but the facts are incontrovertible.
