About this folder
This collection contains evidence of enslaved people’s resistance to being traded as property. I gathered ads that suggested individuals ran away either after being sold or because they were sold, took action in order to prevent being sold, and those that suggested resistance to new enslavers after a sale or transfer of some kind had been made. It shows that, while not always successful, enslaved people exercised what little agency they had in order to have some control over their circumstances.
