Harriet Neeley (formerly Harriet McCowens) searching for her brothers Lewis Thornton and George Thompson
MR. EDITOR - Please allow me to inquire for my brother who was stolen from me in December, 1868, by some persons who were moving. I was living at the time within three miles of Benton, Texas. His name is Lewis Thornton. He was eight years old when he was stolen. When a child he crawled into the fire and burnt his head and face, leaving on the back part of his head a scar which can be easily seen when there is no covering on it. HIs father's name is Ben Pertilla; his mother Emiline Thompson. He had two brothers, Green Jefferson and George Thompson. When I last heard from brother George he was living in New Orleans, but that has been 16 years. My mother and I are the only ones living to my knowledge. My name, when brother Lewis was stolen, Harriet McCowens; now it is Harriet Neeley. The preachers will please help me find my brothers. Those of New Orleans will please inquire in their congregations for brother George Thompson. My mother is quite old and much depressed on account of their absence.
