Agnes Taylor searching for her son, Watson, who was sent to Avery College.

Avery College was founded in Pennsylvania in 1849 by Rev. Charles Avery (a wealthy white abolitionist) as a school for black students. It was believed that the school also served as a stop on the Underground Railroad.

Rev. Hiram Revels was the first black Senator, appointed to represent Mississippi during Reconstruction.
