  • Army substitute refers to someone who performed someone else's military service during the Civil War. The Enrollment Act of 1863 (US) allowed for draftees to "hire" replacements for $300 to enroll and serve in the United States Army in their place. The Confederate government also allowed men to hire substitutes beginning in April 1862; the cost and terms varied over the course of the war.
